3.2. Viewing the Remote Computer

SpyAnywhere is very easy to use. All you need to do is install the software on the PC
you wish to remotely view and monitor. Once the software is installed run spyanywhere.exe
and simply set your password and press "Start Sever" to start the software up!

What is an IP?
First of all, before using SpyAnywhere you should be familiar with what an IP address is. In layman's
terms, your IP is your 'phone number' on the Internet. An IP is a number, 12 digits maximum, that appears
in the format 123.123.123.123 (ie: a valid IP is 65.23.39.243). Every PC on the Internet has an IP address.
To use SpyAnywhere you need to know the IP address of the PC you are connecting to - luckily SpyAnywhere
will always provide you the IP address you need to connect to!

Accessing the Remote PC
To access the remote PC you must have the IP address of the remote PC in hand. You can get
this IP manually from the machine(it is listed on the SpyAnywhere interface)
or have it emailed to you via the IP delivery feature!

Once you have the IP simply enter in http://ip_address into your web-browser - where
ip_address is replaced by the IP of the remote machine! (ie: http://65.23.39.243)

Note: the IP must be correct, and the server must be in active mode (you must click "Start Server"
to be able to access the remote PC). You can also connect to yourself using http://127.0.0.1

3.9. General Settings

Windows Startup
By checking the "Run in Listening Mode on Windows Startup" mode button on SpyAnywhere's main
interface, SpyAnywhere will load when the current username you are logged in under turns on their PC.
It will also be ready, listening to connect. This works best in conjunction with the stealth mode feature!

Minimized Startup
By checking the "Load SpyAnywhere Minimized to System Tray" button you will make SpyAnywhere
load to the system tray on Windows startup. This feature is good if you do not want SpyAnywhere to be in
stealth - but you do not want it getting in the way when the software is ran.

3.10. Custom Port Settings

SpyAnywhere can be set to run on a custom port (other than the default port 80). To change ports enter a new port in the 'custom port' edit field after enabling the 'custom server port' option. Once you enter a port click 'save port'. Now start monitoring - you will have to access the client via http://ip_address:PORT where ip_address and port are replaced by the IP of the remote machine, and port is the new port you specified.

3.11. IP Email Delivery

SpyAnywhere has the unique ability to allow you to have the remote PC IP address emailed to you
every time it updates. This allows you to constantly stay in contact with the remote PC.
All you need to do is configure your email SMTP host (if you do not know this, contact your ISP or
network administrator for help - mail.spytech-web.com is a SMTP host, for example) and a recipient address (most likely your e-mail
address).

Setting it up
SMTP Host: This is your mail host that you use for your email clients. If you do not know this contact
your ISP or system administrator.
Recipient: This is where the logs are delivered to. Most likely your own personal email address.
Mail From: This is the address where your mail will be sending from. It is a good idea to use
your own email address for this, or you can make up one (but this may not sometimes work well).
SMTP Authentication: configure this option if your email server requires outgoing authentication.

How to enable this option: you can turn this feature on by clicking on the IP Delivery button on the
SpyAnywhere interface.

Frequent Questions
Here are some common questions users have about the email delivery process:
Q: Does SpyAnywhere use my email program to send the logs?
A: No - SpyAnywhere uses its own built in emailer - all emails are sent invisibly.

Q: I am using the default SpyAnywhere Email Delivery options with mail.spytech-web.com as my server
but it will still not send, what's wrong?
A: Try changing your mail from and SMTP host address to the ones you use in your own email
software, such as Outlook Express. If you are using an ISP, like Microsoft Network, the logs
may not send with mail.spytech-web.com as your server because MSN tends to block outside
party email servers.

Q: Can I test the email delivery without having to wait every few minutes for SpyAgent to
automatically send?
A: Yes! Simply click "Test" in the IP Delivery setup screen! If the test worked you will receive an email
with the IP!

3.12. Security Restrictions

Server Restrictions
SpyAnywhere allows you to control what features you can use remotely in the SpyAnywhere web
interface - this is useful for multiple users having access to the remote PC to keep access at a minimum.

Password Protection
The SpyAnywhere server is password protected. Simply click on the "Passwords" button on the SpyAnywhere
interface to change or set the server access password. You will need this password to stop the server, or to exit it during active mode.

IP Allowances
SpyAnywhere allows increased security by allowing you to specify a list of IP's that you only want to be
able to access the server. All non-matching IP's are rejected from access!

In the IP Allowance List Configuration window, enter an IP, or IP stem (123.123.123.123 or 123.123.123. for example) and click "Add Above IP to List".

To remove an IP highlight in the list and click "Remove Selected IP from list"

Make sure you save the list when you are done!

3.13. Events Log

SpyAnywhere keeps a log of all events related to the software - such as remote commands issued, remote logon failures, local access attempts to stop the server, etc. This log can be exported for later viewing, and can be cleared. The log keeps track of the IP address of the event logged, as well as a description of the event, and its time of occurrence.

3.14. Common Questions

Q: What makes SpyAnywhere unique from other remote administration solutions?
A: SpyAnywhere is unique because it's client side is totally web-based! This means you do not have to worry about having a client program installed on your PC so you can communicate with the remote machine. You can access your remote PC from any computer with an Internet connection and a web-browser once SpyAnywhere is installed on it!

Q: How Do I setup and configure SpyAnywhere?
A: You only need to be at the remote PC ONCE to setup SpyAnywhere! SpyAnywhere is easily setup - just configure your password, your access restrictions, and specify whether you want SpyAnywhere to load on Windows startup in stealth mode.

Q: How Do I access the remote PC?
A: Simple! Just open your web-browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type in "http://ip_address" - where ip_address is the IP address of the remote PC you wish to connect to! From here you will be presented with a login page where you enter your SpyAnywhere password to access the control panel!

Q: How Do I know the IP address of the remote PC?
A: SpyAnywhere can be configured to EMAIL YOU the IP address of the remote PC every time it changes. This allows you to ALWAYS have the IP address for the target machine. This is especially useful if you are monitoring a dialup-connected PC with SpyAnywhere!

Q: How secure is SpyAnywhere?
A: SpyAnywhere is secure as you want it to be. SpyAnywhere can be configured to filter IP addresses so only certain IP addresses are allowed access to SpyAnywhere. Make sure you choose a unique IP address for SpyAnywhere as well! You can choose to limit access as well to SpyAnywhere by disabling features that you do not want to be used remotely - such as remote file system browsing.

Q: What is the minimum configuration that is able to run SpyAnywhere?
A: All you need for SpyAnywhere is a Windows machine. It does not require a web server, since SpyAnywhere is its own HTTP server. The only thing you need to have running on the machine is TCP/IP.

Q: How do I get the IP address of the PC if it is on dialup?
A: You can configure SpyAnywhere to deliver the IP address via email every time the IP changes - just use the IP Delivery Via Email feature!

Q: Who will have access to SpyAnywhere?
A: The only user that will have access to the SpyAnywhere software, locally or remotely, is you - or whoever you give the access password and ip address to. SpyAnywhere cannot be terminated locally without your administrator password. You can also configure SpyAnywhere so only certain IP addresses can access the server.

Q: How do I access my remote PC if it is behind a firewall/router?
A: The easiest way to access a computer that is protected by a firewall is to map one of the firewall's ports to SpyAnywhere's port (default is port 80).

For example:
FIREWALL/ROUTER EXTERNAL IP address: 65.65.65.65
SpyAnywhere machine: IP address: 192.168.1.100

In this case, you should pick a port on the firewall (say, 2000) and use port forwarding to route all traffic on port 2000 to 192.168.1.100
Having done the above, you will be able to access the computer with the URL http://65.65.65.65:2000
